When selecting the pearl necklace length that is right for you,Does it Matter in Choosing the Length of Your Necklace? Pearl Advice with a 6-Point Guide Articles you should consider the occasion, your outfit, and your particular physique. With the 6-Point Guide, though, you will know which length of pearl necklace is appropriate.  Here are the lengths with an explanation of when each should be worn:
1.  Collar – 12 to 13 inches, elegant occasions

For someone with a thin neck, they should consider a Collar-styled pearl necklace.  The Collar-style pearl length would nicely highlight an off-the-shoulder or V-neck top.  The Collar necklace is perfect for formal, high fashion occasions like parties and dressy dinners. For a more shabby chic look, you can also wear with jeans.

2.  Choker – 14 to 16 inches, upscale evening

If you like the Collar-style but would prefer a bit more breathing room, consider the Choker.  At 14 to 16 inches, this should hang just below the neck.  Styles include single and multi-strand, either being proper for an upscale evening.  Keep in mind, this style, too, is most flattering to someone with a thin neck.

3.  Princess – 17 to 19 inches, most common and versatile

Princess length, 17 to 19 inches, is the gold standard for pearl necklace length.  This style is appropriate for most occasions.  Ideally, your top should hit your neckline such that the necklace hangs below the collar or above it.

TIP:  Height does play a role in choosing the right necklace length.  For an attractive look, short or petite women should avoid long necklaces or earrings that will negatively accentuate their height, making them look more diminutive.  Likewise, voluptuous women should stay away from fragile, small pieces, which can disappear on a larger frame.

4.  Matinee – 20 to 24 inches, casual or business attire

If the neckline of your top is either high or unusually low, consider wearing the Matinee.  The Matinee length lends itself nicely for wearing pearl jewelry to the office, yet causal enough for after work drinks.   Since this style garners more attention due to its length, try to avoid tops that are too decorative, which could cause a busy appearance.

5.  Opera – 28 to 34 inches, formal wear

As the name implies, the 28 to 34 inch Opera length is ideal for adding sophistication to a formal gown or blouse.   The length naturally pulls the eyes down to your chest.  This can be ideal if your bust line is more flattering than your neckline.   Be sure, though, that your bra is equally complimentary.

6.  Lariat – 45 inches and greater, bold elegant wear

The Lariat is probably something that you will not wear often, unless you are doing the winter formals circuit.  Lariat is a good choice for those formal occasions where you want to make a lasting statement.  At 45 inches plus in length, this style will emphasize your torso and curves. For added flexibility though, this pearl necklace can be easily doubled or tripled over for shorter lengths.

Using this guide, you can now confidently choose the right necklace length for any occasion or outfit.
