The world is full of strange and interesting jobs but none can be more intriguing than being the lingerie expert and bra fitter for the rich and famous.
There are many strange jobs in this world and I guess if you use your imagination you could come up with quite a few weird occupations practiced by people in many countries. And here is another interesting and strange job that has been performed by a lady in the UK for the past 30 years. This lady, called June Kenton, has been known as the nation’s most infamous or famous fitter of bras, because she fits the bras of the rich and famous.
It all started with a small store around 30 years ago called Rigby and Peller. This store has grown into the most famous firm of upmarket lingerie suppliers in the UK. Any and all bras are sold here from the padded, underwired, sporty, frilled, strapless, lacy to bras for larger ladies and pregnant mothers. But most importantly, this store carries the stock for the bras of royalty and the rich and famous from the UK and abroad.
And naturally the job description of this famous bra fitter includes measuring the busts of the Queen, Princess Diana in years past, and other celebrities like Sophie Dahl, Gwyneth Paltrow and even famous politicians like Margaret Thatcher. And at 75 years of age this famous bra fitter has no plans to retire anytime soon!
Her most famous client is of course the Queen and it was a proud moment when, in 1982, she managed to get the Royal Warrant of approval. This she obtained after being summoned to Buckingham Palace and there she had to demonstrate first hand that her bra fitting skills were of the highest standards, as is the norm for royalty. This was a very nervous first meeting with the Queen but it all went well and the rest is history as they say.
Next followed the Queen Mother and the Princess of Wales, who became a special and close friend. They even shared the same gym and she was invited often to visit her at Kensington Palace. And now the younger generation have also become customers at the store, like Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice for example.
But this versatile store also supplies other markets and customers, like the lingerie for costumes at the National Opera for example. But it’s not just about bespoke corsets so the brand cannot be considered to be stuffy. It also has amongst it’s customers some trendy pop stars like Lady Gaga and Jessie J, to name but a few.
Interestingly enough June is adamant that 85 percent of British women still do not wear the correct bra size. Cups that are too small and straps that are too large at the back seems to be the main problem. The end result is that bras reveal ridges and bulges in all the wrong places and more importantly, they are uncomfortable and most women can’t wait to take them off after a hard days work.
