After watching my first MGMT video clip with their psychedelic,Top Fashion Print This Season - Tribal Articles electro-pop tunes and neon tribal imagery, I knew their look was going to become an influential, pop-culture hit. Funnily enough fashion editors are keeping their eyes on tribal prints as its popularity has hit street styles and haute couture. With animal print sending people in a frenzy about patterned outfits seasons back, it seemed fitting that a smooth transition meant tribal prints came into fashion and has proved popular for both summer and winter. The versatility of the tribal pattern means it can be used during any season and is the reason why it has me hooked. Scandinavian prints which were a hit last winter have been replaced with linear geometric shapes, a noticeable aesthetic from indigenous American tribes. As some patterns have the tendency to be quite busy, the construction of garments are kept minimal to place emphasis on the print. For summer, the print is a lot more noticeable in bright, multicoloured patterns seen in all garments from dresses to leggings. English company Patternity have put a Gothic spin on the style with geometric black and white stockings making legs look like tattooed futuristic totem poles. Whatever vibrant garment you choose to wear, it is sure to fit well on the beach or give off an urban jungle vibe on the streets.Being a lady of colour, I am embracing vibrant colours, although black and white shades also look brilliant. Mixing patterns has not been seen as a no-no this time with street and haute couture showing their passion for the style, mixing prints and colours resulting in stand out combos. Sticking to one print or one garment with a bold pattern also look great if you don't feel so daring, however tribal patterning is all about having fun and bringing out your native instincts. With exotic prints usually reserved for women's fashion, the rule has been broken with men also dressed in the style, (again referring back to MGMT). Milan fashion week this year had bold fashion statements for men in general including tribal print seen in many haute couture labels. Funkier street styles have also draped native tribal patterning in various accessories from hats to scarves as well as sweaters or pants, emphasising that the print can be worn by everyone.Native or tribal prints are the patterns this season and seasons to come. Their exotic flare has bought creativity to all outfits and have proven to be a hit. If you are hoping to add some variation to an outfit, this is a simple way to achieve it.
