What does a person need to be a great leader? Time management, responsibility, self-reliance, independence, even temper, etc are sure to be important in becoming a successful leader. But when I came to the heart of the problem, I saw some other qualities that provided me with a deep insight into this issue.

I know it from my personal experience, because I chanced to have felt on my own back what it means to be a successful leader.  

I’d like to talk about my leadership experience that I gained while monitoring a little kid during Big Buddy program at UNC. It was the first time when I realized what leadership style could be effective in reality. You know, my passion in life is kids. Because of it, I was in the seventh heaven when I got involved in that program. It was excellent opportunity for me to help out an unfortunate kid, to bond with him and to have fun. But what I did not know was that the program was not only a way to have fun, as it was a real test for my leadership skills. I understood that the child should benefit from the program and I was supposed to serve as an example for him. I expected that he would start trusting me, confiding in me for advice, asking my opinion about things. But there was nothing. And then I realized that the child did not benefit from program at all, he did not consider me to be his role model. The child did not trust me; I did not manage to build credibility and confiding relations. As a result all our conversations were superficial and did not touch child’s inner world, his feelings and thoughts. I could not understand his emotional state, his desires; I could not understand him at all. And then it occurred to me what if I would try to step into his shoes, to see world through his eyes. And I tried. And, you know, we reached mutual understanding; we could relate and trust each other. It was a turning-point of my views on leadership.

From that moment I strongly believe that assertive, emphatic leadership is much more effective than strict and formal one.  The ability to step into the shoes of the people, the ability to empathize them, to understand and support always results in higher level of people’s credibility, trust and respect. In order that people look up to a leader, take seriously his advice, consider his opinion and respect him, first of all a leader should be a humane, sincere and compassionated person. Now I’m fully sure that a successful leader is a person who can be a good listener, can be assertive and compassionate, can clearly understand people’s feeling, emotions and desires. A great leader is a person who always ready to step into other’s shoes, to see the world through other’s eyes, to look at their needs and empathize them.

My leadership experience in the Big Buddy program at UNC was a great contribution to my leadership development. I learnt my lesson well, and now I know exactly what can make a good leader be a successful and great one. Empathy, assertive attitude, respect, deep understanding, effective feedback, ability to step into the shoes of the people are very important in becoming a great leader. My thoughts are not mere words at all, because I try all my findings in practice. Thus, my leadership experience with Ben has recently helped me out in other leadership positions. The most recent has been my tour guide experience when I managed to make people trust me and relate to me. It was wonderful experience. I feel that a great leader is maturing inside my soul and heart. I have created this leader by myself according to my views on leadership skills and abilities.

I have already learnt to be a successful leader, but what I’m eager to do is to try me leadership style working for consulting firms or for nonprofit organizations. I’m very interested in working in this two fields and I strongly believe that my leadership style can be extremely effective and successful in these two fields.
