There are many different parts and systems that all work together to create a house. When it comes to plumbing,Plumbing – Maintenance and Care Articles you may not think about how the entire process works until a problem arises. However, there are things that you can do take care of this system and prevent problems in the future. In the long run, this may save you time as well as money.

Bathroom Leak

While a leak seems like a small problem, over time it can be expensive as it drains water and money away from the house and you may not even realize what is happening. One of the most common issues you may have is a toilet leak. Typically, the problem is the flush valve flapper or ball. It can be falling apart because of its age or it may just be defective.

If this is the case, you will notice water continuing to move into the toilet bowl long after it has been flushed. If you can't see or hear a problem, but you suspect a leak, put some dye in the toilet bowl after flushing. Come back and about a half an hour. If the liquid in the toilet changes color, there may be a leak.

Installing a new flapper or ball is easy and inexpensive. Just pick up a new one at any hardware store. While they do vary in price, choose one the you think will work best depending on how much the bathroom is used. Remember, this part will need to be replaced again and again as it wears down, so don't invest too much money into the replacement.

Kitchen Leak: Faucet

Keeping up with the plumbing in the kitchen can be a challenge, but leaky faucet is something you can easily handle. Before you begin any type of plumbing work in the house, start by turning off the water. This gives you an easier access to the area without the concern of water going everywhere. You will first need to remove the faucet from the sink. It is usually attached by a screw, so look around to see where you will be able remove it. Usually, it can be found on the top of the handle, underneath a cap.

The most common reason for a leak is worn out rubber seals. Overtime, the seal is less effective, and water begins to slip through. By replacing the seal, the water flows smoothly through the faucet and into the sink. In order to purchase the correct replacement, take the worn out seal with you to the hardware store.

Call a Professional

If you are unable to keep up with the care that your plumbing system needs, call a plumber to see if they offer a service to help you with the upkeep of the system. They may be able to come in and assist with the preparations for freezing weather or help get the house set for you to leave on an extended vacation.
