If your ideal is to move up in the ranks of a shop, you will eventually have to talk with customers, clients or patrons. This takes a specific skill that is difficult to learn. You need to be able to effectively communicate with people what is wrong with their vehicle and what repairs need to be done to it. For example, on a simple brake repair job, if you were the head mechanic, you would need to explain the inner-workings of pads, rotors, etc.

When you are applying, be sure that you check the reputation of the company. Only apply to companies with a reputation for trustworthiness and fairness among employees and customers.
