WardsAuto World rates the top engines every year and this year the Ecotec made the cut. The Ecotec 2.0L turbo I-4 engine which comes standard on the all new 2012 Buick Regal has been named in the top ten best engines for 2012.

The engine deserves the spot due to its high power. It is the most power-dense engine that is still certified by the Society of Automotive Engineers. The engine features 270 horsepower which is the highest specific output of any GM production engine. It also features 135 hp per liter,Buick’s Ecotec Engine is Officially One of the Best Articles which is what makes it so power-dense.

“The turbocharged Ecotec 2.0L belongs on the list this year because it makes an outrageous 135 hp per liter in the Regal GS, and it’s a blast to drive,” said WardsAuto World Editor-in-Chief Drew Winter. “This engine delivers a level of power and sophistication that redefines Buick.”

The Ecotec engine is quickly growing a reputation for being fast and powerful. In the recent Silver State Classic Challenge the Regal GS achieved victory in the 120 mph Grand Touring class. The vehicle had only a .019 deviation from a perfect time. The engine can go from zero to sixty in less than seven seconds and can even go a quarter mile in only a matter of 15.2 seconds going 98 mph. And this engine doesn’t just power the GS. A slightly less powerful version of the same engine is available in the Regal Turbo. The engine is manufactures at the Spring Hill, Tennessee powertrain plant.

The Ecotec turbo made the top ten in a tight competition. Ward’s made their decision after looking at thirty five different engines made by fifteen manufacturers. The award also comes with strict requirements, looking at all aspects of the engine functions like power, noise, fuel economy, comparative data to similar engines, vibrations, and even whether the engine uses any new technology. Luckily for the Ecotec, it utilizes much of the latest technology available in engines.

"Our continuously variable valve timing is tuned to work in tandem with direct injection and twin scroll turbocharging to achieve optimum fuel economy, lower emissions, and instant performance when needed,” said Mike Anderson, global chief engineer for Ecotec engines. “Having 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque available over a wide range of engine speeds makes for a very exciting driving experience.”

Both the Ecotec engine and the GS utilize the latest and greatest in engine and vehicle technology. It’s no wonder that it was named one of the top ten enginesfor 2012!
