Having a personal mechanic is a wonderful benefit. However,Do-it-yourself Auto Repair: Simple Jobs You can do Yourself Articles if you are handy with a toolbox and can follow some basic instructions, there are a few areas of auto repair that you can tackle on your own. If you are in over your head, you will need to head over to see your mechanic. Otherwise, try completing the following jobs on your own to save yourself some money and broaden your knowledge of general mechanics.

The most common area of auto repair that people take on is a basic oil change. While not technically a repair (it is more specifically a maintenance issue), it is one that is most often performed by a mechanic at a shop. Oil changes are not difficult or really all that time consuming. With a few basic supplies and some time on a Saturday afternoon, you can change the oil in your car and keep it running well. If you are not sure how to change the oil, have a friend or family member give you a tutorial. Once you have successfully changed the oil in your car, you will be able to do it every time and save yourself the cost of a trip to a lube shop.

Another area of auto repair that is commonly performed by car owners is checking and changing the various fluids in the vehicle. From transmission fluid to anti-freeze, your car relies on lubricants and coolants to keep it running smoothly and without incident. Neglecting to check and refill these fluids can wreak havoc on the working parts of the car.

One auto repair that car owners do (typically under duress) is tire changes. Flat tires seem to be most prevalent when the car owner is running errands, on vacation, or in a hurry. Either way, the tire needs to be changed quickly and efficiently. Knowing how to change the tires on your car is beneficial so that you do not end up stranded on the side of the road. Along that same line: always make sure you have a spare!

Auto repair shops are quite prevalent in most American cities. If you do not feel like completing these types of repairs, you can always give your mechanic a call and have him (or her) handle the task for you. The most beneficial aspect of doing the work yourself is that you can save a lot of money. However, there are times when you just do not have room in your schedule or routine to perform repairs on your car. If that is the case, then your mechanic will be your best friend!
