Hero Motocorp has finally launched its first motorcycle to wear its new badge. Impulse is the Hero first motorcycle since it bought out Honda stake in super successful quarter century old joint venture. There could have been nothing better than impulse for Here to showcase its prowess. Only Bajaj Auto has had guts and the foresight to properly test the on-off road motorcycle waters in India before. It was SX Enduro which was launched in early 1990 was ahead of its time but suffered poor execution which sent it spiraling in to nosedive from which it never recovered.

Can Here Moto find success with its Impulse? Lets hop astride for a detailed look.

Shorter riders could find themselves intimidated by the Impulse, for its long stroke suspension makes this a pretty tall motorcycle, what with a liberal 245mm ground clearance. The Impulse come with custom made Ceat tyres, their unique thread pattern in keeping with the bike?s on-off road identity. Impulse?s high mud arrow shaped, floating front guards and body panels are detailed with a fair helping of styling decals, while the headlight are easily recognisable for its Honda lineage.

Hero Impulse gets adequate quality grips, levers, switches and mirrors while its sleek black instruments offer easily legible digital and analogue readouts. A wide , alloy triple clamp mounts a silver handlebar, and the Impulse shows serious off-road intent with a set of knuckle guards. Both Boomerang shaped side panel on 14.1 litre fuel tank are dual toned. This is one of the few Indian motorcycles that provides helmet lock. Impulse has flat and comfortable saddle and claws its way high up onto the fuel tank in true blue off road motorcycle fashion. On the left side from front lies the long, often hot silencer unit that could often have the pillion rider break out in sweat. The alloy grab bar and LED powered tail lamp at adds much panache. Attention to detail, paint quality, fit and finish and all the plastic and rubber are laudable.

The kick or electric started Impulse deploys 149.2cc, four stroke and air cooled powerplant. Its crankshaft is counter balanced for enhanced smoothness and the head packs in a pair of valves. There is a CV type carburetor breathing via a viscous paper type air filter element. Peak power output is 13.2 bhp at 7500 rpm while maximum torque of 1.36kgm kicks in at 5000rpm. Final drive is provided by a exposed, O-ring sealed chain that comes with a tensioner.

The engine of Impulse is punchy enough displaying good flexibility and strong low and mid-range power. The bike shoots off the blocks with a strong urgency making it fairly simple to launch the front wheel into a skywalk. The powerband is wide, vide-free and throttle response is smooth. The clutch feel is perfectly weighted, progressive and light, just right for city use and the 5-speed gearbox shifts smoothly and precisely via a toe only level in the 1 down, 4 up pattern. Impulse shows sprightly performance for this class of Indian motorcycle.

The chassis of Impulse incorporated quite a few unseen measures that will promote excellent reliability in the long run. Its long travel front telescopic forks have an offset axle to reduce trail while maintaining castor providing better handling while riding over the rough surface.

Impulse runs a 19inch rim in front and smaller 17inch at the rear end, shod with ample size rubber front and rear. The riding position is tall, commanding and comfortable, the rider sitting forward set in the motorcycle. The wide handle bars provide excellent leverage for quick, effortless direction changes and the Impulse feels really stable at all speeds natural to steer as well as smartly balanced when riding really slow. Riding is terrific and hovercraft like, the motorcycle seamlessly soaking up rough road sections. On braking front Impulse employs a 240mm disc in front and a serrated, metal pedal operated 110mm rear drum unit at the rear. Brake fell is good, the bike holding its line and tracking true even when really piling on the pressure at both levers.

The well Hero Impulse price gets emphatic thumbs up as a top quality, tough refined and practical bike that makes super sense for everyday use on Indian roads. With commanding riding position, short drivers are at a disadvantage. Impulse demonstrates superb ride quality and really forgiving handling. Under seat exhaust will give pillion rider a hot time but apart from that this is a brilliantly finished, segment starting motorcycle that has what it takes to become a runaway success.
