You’ve probably seen a display of impulse merchandise in every retail store you’ve been in,Compare and Create Retail Impulse Displays Articles and if your store doesn’t yet include one or two of these types of displays you could be missing out on lucrative revenue!

The best kinds of impulse merchandise items are generally small, low cost items customers can easily grab and not feel guilty about purchasing once they’ve left your store. Candy items and small novelty toys for their children are some of the most popular kinds of impulse purchases, but as you’re deciding what kinds of merchandise to include keep two points in mind:

  1. The kinds of customers your store usually sees. For example, if your store caters to children or adults who often shop with children, candy and small novelty toys might make the best impulse purchase displays.
  2. Your store’s bestsellers. If you already know of a few inexpensive, small items your store tends to sell a lot of, consider creating an impulse purchase display filled with these items.

Below are three ideas for creating your own or purchasing pre-filled displays or retail impulse displays for your store.

Countertop Displays Are Ideal for Retail Impulse Purchases

Countertop displays are the most ideal for retail impulse purchases, and for two reasons:

  1. The customers are stationary, so it’s more likely they’ll spend a minute looking at whatever product has caught their eyes.
  2. The customers are checking out, and that “now or never” feeling makes it more likely they’ll add on the extra merchandise. Once the merchandise items are in their hands at the checkout counter, they’re less likely to change their minds.

You can find pre-filled displays racks for your countertops filled with popular candies or novelty toys. For example, many distributors provide store owners with a selection of pre-filled lollipop trees and plastic containers filled with candies like Jawbreakers or Gumballs.

You can use common display fixtures such as colored or clear plastic containers, revolving bucket racks, post card racks, spinner racks, or pegboard displays to create your own impulse purchase display.

Create Floor Displays Near Your Countertop for Retail Impulse Purchases

Although countertop displays are best for retail impulse purchases, they’re not the only options. You can create floor displays throughout your store – and especially near your store’s checkout counter – with impulse purchases in mind.

As with checkout countertop displays, you can find floor display racks already filled with impulse purchase merchandise or you can combine the same kinds of racks with your customers’ favorite candies and novelty toys to create your own retail impulse purchase displays.

Hang Wall Displays Near Your Countertop for Retail Impulse Purchases

Wall displays of impulse purchase merchandise are similar to floor displays – they’re not quite as ideal as countertop displays but, positioned near your countertop or in an area often frequented by the kinds of customers who enjoy that particular merchandise, they can be rather effective.

You can find wall display fixtures already filled with popular candies and novelty items. Usually, these fixtures include levels of buckets filled with impulse merchandise and are designed to mount on your wall.

If you already have wall display fixtures such as slatwall fixtures and acrylic containers for hanging, you can create your own wall displays for retail impulse purchases.
