Overfilling the trans reservoir will not hurt it, but it is possible that keeping it too full can make the fluid leak onto moving parts which may cause it not to work correctly. You may see leaks that you normally would not see.

In the same respect, putting too much fluid in will not cause the seals to blow. Overfilling too often can increase fluid levels so much that a transmission can leak fluid through the vent and may also cause the seals to leak.

If you have recently had repair work completed on your car and it is now acting up, you need to take it back to where you first had it repaired. Most transmission repair shops will recommend to you that you have your fluid changed about every 30,000 miles. On heavy duty vehicles, it is recommended that the fluid be changed every 15,000 miles. It is important to locate your owner's manual which will tell you when to have your fluids changed.

A burnt fluid smell is not always a bad sign. There are some fluids that become brown and began to smell burnt. This is a normal part of the engine's operation. You should take your car to a transmission shop to make sure there is nothing more serious.
