Whichever metal is used for the element of a RTD, it is still quite fragile. It therefore needs to be protected in some way. Most elements have an outer protective layer, a casing for this exact purpose. This sheath size can also be a determining factor as to which type of sensor should be used.
In situations where an ordinary RTD sheath is too large for the application necessary, a Thermocouple can be used as their sheath diameter can be quite small.
