Sometimes people feel a gap year is taken to shed oneself from his or her responsibilities. However, this isn’t the case. A gap year is a time period that is taken by a person between or during their educational years.  Most often, a gap year is generally taken after completion of high school and before college commences. Although it can be taken any time you want to whether it’s during your college days or after graduation or before taking up a job.

Gap years can provide you a whole new perspective of the world. What you would like to do all throughout your gap year depends on your desires and creativity.  You can do internships, teach, travel or get involved in some innovative project. The essential thing to be considered is that whatever you choose to do it should help you in gaining adequate knowledge that will help you grow into a matured person intellectually. Your experience during the gap year should be able to push you out of your comfort zone. When life offers you situations that dares your comfort zones, and then you learn to adjust and gain some maturity that isn’t quite easily attained by merely going to university directly from high school.

You can take a one year gap, gain greater focus and still build up a strong resume with the help of various gap options available to you.

1.     Volunteer

Participate in community services or volunteering programs during the gap year that will help you greatly in becoming a good person. Devoting a year of your life in lending a helping hand to others is extremely noble and worthwhile. Many organizations also provide opportunities to young students to volunteer in different countries across the globe. Employers frequently look ahead to gap years dedicated to the service of respectable missions like BUNAC, International Citizen Service, Rising Minds, and Project Trust etc.

2.    Travel

      “We travel because we need to, because distance and difference is the secret tonic of creativity. When we get home, home is still the same. But something in our mind has been changed, and that changes everything.”- is a popular quote made by Jonah Lehrer, American author and journalist.

      Travelling through a country where the language is unknown to you, understanding its cultural disparities and their standpoint can act as a huge steering in changing the way you look at life.

3.    Internship

      Get work placements to gain more skills and experience. Doing internships at reputed companies can help you to gain more knowledge about the on-job work and give you an edge in your career.
