If you’re dealing with clay soil, there are numerous things to think over. One of the most important issues is that you will need to adjust for the actions of the soil. Obviously you will not entertain to have your foundation and basement walls cracked during the first year due to any changes in moisture. All of us are well aware of the fact that moisture changes the movement of soil. During rainy seasons clay grows, during dry seasons clay shrinks. This can be seen in the soil itself if you watch the ground you will notice the cracks and shrunken appearance the ground has, particularly in areas that may have had a pond or a creek.
In case you’re building a basement, you want to build on solid ground, or as solid ground feasible for the relative application. If you are dealing in an area that is made up of clay or other expansive soils, you may want to consider leveling the ground with lime. Treating the ground with lime gives a much more stable surface to work with. Therefore ground stabilization is very much important for a solid ground for basement.
The very first thing you need to do is to remove not only the earth in the area that you want to use as your basement but you need to dig below this area and pour the lime in the trenches put into. Trenches must be dug around the perimeter of the foundation and in columns space throughout the foundation approximately 3 feet apart. These trenches will turn into a solid base for your home. Another important thing to do is to remove several inches of soil. It provides you ample space needed to build your foundation that you want to act as a basement for your home construction.
After removing the earth in the trenches, you are required to fill those trenches with lime slurry prepared of crushed lime and water. This mixture will be generally thick. Genuinely, we aren't discussing about the fruit lime. Instead we are talking about limestone for ground stabilisation. The lime slurry is a mixture of crushed lime and twenty to sixty percent water (measured by weight) that can be mixed inside the trenches.
After the drying of lime slurry, you will find a solid rock base to build your foundation. This move will keep moisture from causing ground expansion that will crack your foundation.
