Do you often think about how you can aim to keep staff members motivated? It's not always easy to ensure that employees are doing their best for the business and you may sometimes wonder whether there is more that you could be doing.

Indeed, there may be a hope that others will follow your actions. But this often ignores the fact that you have clear motivation for doing well. It's likely that there may be significant financial rewards for you, if your own business continues to thrive.

As an alternative, it may be worth noting that there could be a feeling that you need to do well in order to keep paying the mortgage, or to maintain your current lifestyle. All of these aspects may well be associated with your own work ethic and it's also likely that you'll have a desire to build something that's really successful.

When you look at the way in which employees act within the workplace, you may conclude that some simply don't act in the same way. Could it be the case that they require greater financial incentives, in order to ensure that they make an appropriate impact? You might be able to experiment, by using bonuses and additional payments, although such a course of action is not available to all.

So what else can you look to do when finding ways to improve this situation? It seems to me that one option would involve considering what you employees actually feel when they arrive at work each day. Plenty of people would say that they don't enjoy their jobs, but what do they make of their workplace surroundings?

If people arrive at work and feel negative about the environment, then it seems clear that this will lead to a negative mindset developing. You don't need to be an expert psychiatrist to know that such a mindset is likely to lead to lower productivity levels.

It's clear that this is the exact opposite of what you will be aiming to achieve. So how can you go about changing things? If you're currently asking people to work in a building that is drab and doesn't offer much inspiration, then you shouldn't be too surprised if their performance levels continue to disappoint.

So does this mean that you need to find new premises? Although this may represent a fairly drastic course of action, there are alternatives that could have the same effect. You might look, for example, at considering the internal state of your office. Could this be improved?
