Becoming a great a salesperson is not an easy task.  Some people are born with natural ability while others have to work on it extensively over time.  In this article I will go through the steps you need to take if you want to become a really great salesperson.  This is not an exhaustive list,How To Become A Better Salesperson Articles but if you follow the advice, you will assuredly become much better at sales.

Master the Art of the Indirect Approach

When people know they are receiving a direct sales pitch, oftentimes their guard is up and they aren’t likely to buy anything.  For this reason, you must learn how to approach your potential clients indirectly.  If you can distract them by having an engaging, unrelated conversation, they will drop their guard and you will have a much greater chance of success once you actually start pitching your product.  If you don’t use an indirect approach, you will probably end up just sounding like a telemarketer.  Don’t let that happen to you.

Develop a Positive Attitude

This is an incredibly important thing to develop if you want to be successful in sales.  Emotions are contagious, so you want to have positive emotions when you are doing sales.  If you are very positive in a sales meetings, those around won’t be able to help feeling great themselves.  No one wants to buy anything from someone who isn’t enthusiastic about what they are selling.  Try your best to smile more in general.  Studies show that smiling more can actually have a positive effect on your emotional state.  If you can develop a positive attitude, you will put yourself at a significant advantage.  Having a positive attitude is possibly the most important thing you need to become successful in sales.  If you already don’t have a positive attitude, set a plan in place to work on it over time.

Know Everything about Your Product

While having a great personality and attitude is very important, it won’t matter if you know nothing about your product.  You should learn everything you possibly can about your product.  Do extensive research and know the answers cold to any questions you could anticipate someone asking about the product.  Showing a true mastery of your product will give your potential customers the confidence that they are buying a great product.  While having a positive attitude is really important, you will not get many sales if you can’t answer any potential customer questions.

Do Extensive Research on Your Potential Client

You can become much more efficient and effective in sales if you learn everything you can about your client and the client’s company ahead of making the sales pitch.  There are companies out there, such as Jigsaw, DiscoverOrg, and iProfile, that maintain large HR databases on major companies.  You can use that information to see org charts and personnel responsibilities, as well as information about the company’s budgets, spending initiatives, etc.  Take advantage of those resources to learn a lot about the client ahead of time.  This will allow you to tailor your sales approach in a way that can maximize your chances of success.
