Let’s face it: moving is stressful. There is no way to get around that fact unless you have the money to hire someone else to complete the entire process for you. Perform the following actions approximately one month prior to moving day:

1. Go over your moving arrangements. If you haven’t done so, obtain at least three quotes from three different mover Denver companies. If you have already done this, contact the company you hired to confirm their services.

2. Keep track of your moving expenses in a notebook. Keep all of your receipts in one place.

3. Confirm storage arrangements in new location.

4. If you are changing banks, contact your current bank and make necessary arrangements to transfer your accounts.

5. Fill out and turn in a change-of-address from for your mail.

6. If you have children, notify your day care provider of your intent to move.

7. If you have children, contact their new school and find out how to get their records transferred.

8. Find a physician in your new location.

9. Contact insurance companies to transfer policies

10. Change your address with all of your creditors, magazines, and other companies that send you mail.

Perform the following actions approximately two weeks prior to moving day:

1. Sell any items you do not want in your new location.

2. Contact utility companies to arrange for transfer of service.

3. Start packing up belongings that are not needed very often.

4. Only buy perishable food you can consume quickly.

Perform the following actions approximately one week prior to moving day:

1. Make a list of the belongings you will be taking to the new location yourself.

2. Verify all moving arrangements with the moving company and your storage facility.

3. Give your friends and family members a change-of-address card.

4. Gather your cleaning supplies.

5. Pack outdoor items.

Perform the following actions approximately two days prior to moving day:

1. Defrost and clean your freezer and fridge.

2. Contact your bank to close your accounts if you are changing banks.

3. Finalize financial issues related to selling or renting your house.

4. Pack the rest of your items.

Perform the following actions on moving day:

1. Ensure the moving company knows where it is going.

2. Watch movers as they load your boxes.

3. Clean old house.

4. Turn down thermostat, unplug appliances, lock doors and return keys, if necessary.

5. Give your forwarding address and phone number to realtor or leasing agent.

Once you get to your new location, there will be many other activities you will need to do to ensure a smooth move. But first, take some time to relax and get your second wind. There will be plenty of time to unpack now that you are home.
