Overview Of Jefferson State Community CollegeJefferson State Community College has a main campus in Birmingham, Alabama and three satellite campuses located in Shelby County, St. Clair, and Clanton. The main campus is located on a 200 acre wooded site that comprises the highest elevation in Jefferson County. While the campuses are in different locations the college works diligently to maintain a unified spirit of community. There are numerous clubs, organizations, and programs that provide all of the students opportunities to interact and participate in JSCC functions. Offering over 100 Associates Degree Programs that are designed for transfer to a 4-year university, Career and Professional Certification Programs, and Non-credit and Continuing Education classes, JSCC strives to provide every student with the tools that they need to succeed in the major field of study.Several scholarships are offered to students residing in Alabama. These scholarships are offered each year by the Jefferson State Community College and cover the full-tuition of the student. In addition each student entering the college is given the applications and guides that they need to get grants and funding throughout their academic career. The most striking characteristic of JSCC is their dedication and commitment to the success of their student population. Students select advisors based on their major of study. Advisors work with the student to assure that every opportunity that will benefit the student in achieving their goals is pursued. Advisors assist students in planning and setting objectives that will insure that they can transfer seamlessly to the four-year university. The STARS (Statewide Transfer And Articulating System) program is used throughout the university system in Alabama. Students are given access to this system when they first enter the college. It is designed to help students attain all the credits and coursework necessary for transfer to the 4-year university. In addition it alerts students to courses that may not provide the necessary transfer credits so that they are not lost. The Distance Education Department offers a full range of educational opportunities to students via Internet, video conferencing, and dual enrollment. The courses are taught by JSCC faculty members and the same standard of excellence is provided to these students. The programs offered through the Distance Education Department have been created for students who are balancing family, work , and education and provide the necessary encouragement and support to ensure success.The Bachelor Completion Program offers students of Jefferson State Community College an opportunity to work towards their Bachelors of Science Degree in Management from the JSCC campus. Students take courses through an interactive system and receive the necessary credits to attain their degree. This partnership between JSCC and the Jefferson State University has opened doors for students that would previously have been unavailable.
