This is due not only to the history it holds, but as well to the high standard of excellence it has continued to provide for its students. The legacy that Thomas Jefferson University has is remarkable. The original medical college began in 1824, but the university has not stayed in the past. It has advanced and produced some of the most respected doctors in the world. Three colleges make up the Thomas Jefferson University; these include Jefferson Medical College, Jefferson College of Graduate Studies and Jefferson College of Health Professions. These are all highly ranked and respected in school ranking systems. A painting called The Gross Clinic, which depicts a surgery that took place at the school, was voted to be sold for $68 million to the National Gallery of Art in Washington. But many from Philadelphia wanted to keep the painting as they felt it was an important part of its history. Money was raised and Wachovia Bank agreed to loan the difference to keep the painting in town.

The rich history of Thomas Jefferson University would make it an exciting and fascinating place to study medicine. The university itself has had a great impact on the world of medicine in many aspects, being able to live and study in that environment would surely be a great atmosphere for any medical student. It is not surprising that in medical school rankings Jefferson ranks so high.
