Former Axapta and currently member of Microsoft Dynamics ERP family is a good fit for upper mid-market.

Microsoft Business Solutions recommends AX in such industries and niches as Process Manufacturing,Dynamics AX Integration and Modification Projects Articles Retail, Supply Chain Management, Projects, International Business, Public Sector.  Openness to non-profit organizations was introduced with new version 2012 (we are writing these lines in June of 2011).  This Corporate ERP application is very flexible and at the same time you may expect reasonable number of consulting hours to be dedicated to MorphX X++ programming and interface modification.  In contrast its sister ERP and accounting products, such as GP, SL, NAV might be easier to implement by CPA style Dynamics reseller.  Let’s take a look at former Great Plains Dynamics.  When you install it you have a choice to load predefined GL chart of accounts.  There is also migration tool from such popular small business products as QuickBooks, Great Plains Accounting for DOS, Microsoft Small Business Financials.  If you expect moderate or heavy data conversion – Integration Manager module is in your disposition.  In the case of AX you are getting more flexibility, but at the same time it should be more exposed to your programmers and software developers.  Let’s take a look at development tools and options:

1. MorphX and its programming language X++.  We are undergoing evolution in our organization from programming projects for Great Plains Dynamics in Dexterity and SAP Business One in C# SB1 SDK to X++.  Well, the whole story is relatively long to quote in this small publication.  The foundation or initial ideas of MorphX and Great Plains Dexterity are probably similar or at least to say parallel.  If you are presenting yourself as IT professional with fifteen plus years of active career, let’s try to place ourselves back to mid 1990th. The competition on the computer hardware, operating system and even graphical platform arenas was pretty fierce between Apple, Microsoft, Unix/Solaris flavors.  At the same time we were observing the raising of upper mid-market corporate ERP systems, such as Oracle, SAP R/3, Progress.  Software Vendors engaged on the Accounting application development arena had to abstract their systems from the uncertain future.  This is probably why we see such constructions as SAP Abap, Great Plains Dexterity, Axapta MorphX with its X++.  Nowadays in earlier 2010th we see computer makers and OS vendors to divide the market in the sense of specialization.  Microsoft Windows platform and SQL Server are probably dominating in business offices.  Apple is strong in our home entertainment and university communities.  Linux is catching up in the third world in such countries as Brazil, Russia, China.  The secret of success of MorphX and X++ is probably in the fact that X++ syntax is very close to C, C++, C# and Java (where Microsoft C# doesn’t deserve the credits as it was introduced later)

2. Dynamics AX version 2012.  Here we see the trend from Microsoft to enable Axapta metadata for being modified in such tools as Microsoft Visual Studio.  The idea is definitely great and we embrace this technology.  We are ISV partner and new technology is our consulting hours and money.  But, if you are end customer we recommend you to be more conservative.  New tools in version 2012 are probably sort of try outs.  In Software development and consulting world we use the term of Service Pack and Patch, when we recognize certain issues with the canned program.  In current turbulent situation we do not even handle manufactured DVD to our customers, as they could not be used few month after being released

3. Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services.  Here we believe that progress is visible.  AX is their tiers application.  SSRS could be used as natively available from Microsoft Business Solutions, or they could be newly developed over MorphX x++ metadata new queries (sorry for being too non-specific in terminology, as article genre is a restriction)

4. Article Syntax and Stylistics.  Well, your author is currently residing in the United States.  However my childhood happened in the Western Moscow suburbs in former Soviet Union, currently Russian Federation.  Dynamics AX is localized in the majority of world regions, and we believe that our exposure to international markets is a plus.  If you are work specific enough to open Google and search for Andrew Karasev – then we could continue our dialogue

5. Andrew Karasev Credo for the next ten years.  Well, large multinational companies will be expanding to China, Brazil, Russia, Kazakhstan, Siberia, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan.  In the past we were staking on Great Plains Dynamics Microsoft Dynamics GP.  Nowadays we are staking on AX and  Microsoft CRM
