If you are IT department manager - you probably know how difficult it is to plan and implement new MRP or ERP application,Dynamics GP or Great Plains Customization Programming and Support Notes Articles especially when your business is to some degree unique and you cannot roll out Accounting system out of the shelf.  Modification often leads to over budgeting and in that small article we would like to give you Great Plains programming success factors review, as we see them through the glasses of our fifteen years of the implementation practice:

1.       Do we really need customization?  The answer, especially negative one might save your organization huge and often unpredictable chunk of money and often it may secure and save your position.  Try to review existing functionality, maybe custom logic could be implemented as special settings

2.       Customization is required.  We are really sorry to hear that, but this is what it is and your company is probably middle size or large corporation, and you will have to face the challenge of customization project management

3.       Great Plains Customization Tools.  Dexterity is the tool of choice when you need to make your add-on integrated into application security realm and user interface.  This tool is almighty and you virtually have no restrictions in modification logic.  However Dex could be classified as proprietary technology, its learning curve might be too long and the real life is in our opinion dictating Dexterity programming outsourcing.   Custom Dex modules are usually distributed via so called Chunk files.  eConnect, this tool is great for ecommerce projects.  It is coded in SQL encrypted stored procedures and these scripts are replicating Dexterity business logic with some restrictions.  Please, refer to our earlier articles in this website on Dexterity, eConnect, EDI, ecommerce

4.       GP Support.  Here you are in the hands of the situation, and behind the scenes - what is your status in Microsoft Business Solutions annual enhancement program.  If you are current in the plan, you should have new version registration key, at this time it is version 10.0.  If you do not have support plan from Microsoft, please feel free to call us: 1-866-528-0577, help@albaspectrum.com
