If you implemented GP several or maybe even dozen years ago for small business,Great Plains Reseller Newsflash: moving from MSDE and SQL Select to MS SQL Server Articles and since then you have grown your enterprise to mid-size, you need to know the guidelines of beefing up Dynamics GP to address your increased transaction processing requirements.  This small publication is targeted to business owners, who participate in technology side of the business development.  We do not pretend to be details oriented to fit IT professional, however the highlights might be worth to read:

1.       Historical low end and high end Great Plains Dynamics versions.  If your Great Plains deployment history goes back to late 1990th and earlier 2000th, then you should remember the name Great Plains Select (on Pervasive SQL Server/Btrieve and Ctree).   When Microsoft acquired Great Plains Software, it took the direction to transfer Great Plains Select customers to MSDE platform.  The switch happened around late 2004, when Microsoft Business Solutions introduced Great Plains Dynamics GP version 8.0, which was only available on Microsoft SQL Server and MSDE 2000.  High end version of Great Plains, such as eEnterprise and Great Plains Professional was historically available on Microsoft SQL Server only (some customers may remember Dynamics C/S+ for Btrieve, but this is really an antiquity)

2.       MSDE and SQL Select as an advantage, where you have to pay for the privilege.  For Dynamics GP 7.5 Standard, Microsoft offered to reissue GP registration key for Great Plains on MSDE to be able to redeploy Great Plains on Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Standard.  Beginning with version 8.0 Microsoft seems to consider MSDE and MS SQL Select (compatible with Great Plains Dynamics GP 9.0 and 10.0) as advantage to use free SQL server platform.  So, you should be able to switch over to MS SQL Server 2000 and 2005 Standard without the need to reissue Reg Key – in this case, be sure that you called your Great Plains VAR to deactivate the privilege to use MSDE and SQL Select

3.       Moving from MSDE to SQL Select 2005.  If you are on Dynamics GP version 8.0, you should call your Dynamics GP reseller or Microsoft Business Solutions directly to reissue your Great Plains registration key

4.       MSDE and SQL Select 2005 limitations.  These free DB platforms are limited to Database size: 2GB for MSDE 2000 and 4GB for MS SQL Select 2005

5.       Adding new modules to Microsoft Dynamics GP.  Assuming that you are current in Great Plains annual enhancement program and you are on Modules based license (not on Dynamics GP Business Ready), you can purchase new licenses thru your Great Plains VAR
