You need to take some precautions to secure your Wi-Fi connection especially in public hotspots. Just follow these precautions that are given below and feel safe. 

Install a Firewall

Make it a point that anytime you use your mobile gear on the road and especially in Wi-Fi hot spots; just try to make sure that you have installed a firewall software. Always remember that hot spots are not secure access points and mobile users need to take responsibility for their own security.

Disable Wi-Fi Ad-hoc Mode

Always allow only the access point networks that you have created using your Wi-Fi software or you can use network connections in Windows XP. Just try not to allow instant network connections that you have not approved of or are aware of. While you are in a hotspot, you may pick up other Wi-Fi networks that you do not want to access or allow access to your laptop. Just disable your ad-hoc mode before entering a hot spot.

Use a VPN

Keep it in mind that when you are connecting to a corporate network mobile user, they should use their company VPN. This process will provide you an additional security for your gear. While you are working in a hot spot for your Wi-Fi connection, you can create new risk exposures and the potential for your data that you want to be comprised.

Disable File & Printer Sharing

While you are using a Wi-Fi hot spot, remember that if you are a mobile users, you do not need to have your laptops file and printer sharing option enabled. As you do it, while using a hot spot, it will leave you vulnerable to hackers. You should disable it before entering a hot spot.

Turn It Off

If you are a mobile user, and you are not connected to a Wi-Fi hot spot, then you should turn off your wireless devices. But if you are working but you do not wish to be connected, just remove the Wi-Fi card. If you are having a Centrino-based system there should be a manual switch to turn your Wi-Fi off. You can even disable the connection by using the Wi-Fi software.

Don't Advertise Your Wi-Fi

Always remember if you are using hot spot, then do not brag strangers about your Wi-Fi capabilities. Try to be discreet when you are working and do not let others view your work.

Make Folders Private

Always make your folders private on your laptop as it will make it less appealing for a hacker to try and gain access to your documents. As in a hot spot you do not know who is working around you or who might be attempting to access your laptop.

Password Protect Your Files

The most important step to securing your data and making your work a less desirable target is to set passwords and protect your files. There are varieties of software programs available on Internet which can provide you with password protection. Always remember to protect any important files by passwords before using a hot spot.
