5 Tips To Help Your Kids Manage Their Homework

Kids often enjoy going to school but when it comes to doing homework it is a little harder to encourage them to do it. Every child initially needs some attention to improve their knowledge and to help them learn how to manage their work without any help. Your child should see that education doesn’t stop in the classroom, but should be learned that education and the learning process which includes homework are a fundamental part of their lives.

Ashley Carter of My Aussie Tutor recently sat down with other private tutors in Perth and came up with these5 tips to help your kids manage their homework:

Make homework a priority – let them unwind and take a rest after school but afterwards make a study time and doing homework a priority over other activities and try to teach the kids that this should be their daily routine.

Have a designated place where the kids can study – that place should be comfortable,well lit, quiet, and provided with all the supplies your child needs. Set a schedule for homework – it should be before TV or playtime. Having a regular, every day schedule make kids learn that it is their responsibility and will help them to complete it.

Remove distractions - There shouldn’t be any others distractions near the kids, for example toys that may detract them from doing their homework

Do not expect or demand perfection – always look at what your child has done, show interest, offer help when they don’t know something and offer praise when something is done well. Offer guidance when needed and help them to figure out what amount of time is needed for every subject.

Encourage independency and responsibility - encourage kids to work independently and to be responsible for their time management and for the obligation of doing the homework, also for preparing the things he/she needs for doing the homework (here, you should not get things organized for them – let that be their responsibility).

Ashley also recommends staying in contact with your children’s teacher and not just waiting till the end of term when grades are released. If there is a problem, it should be discovered as soon as possible and try to make a plan with the teacher to assist the kid throughout that subject. Hiring a tutor is another effective tool that may be used. And don’t forget to encourage and praise your kid when you see them working hard.

Kids are more successful in school when parents take an active interest in their homework — it shows kids that what they do is important.

Of course, helping with homework shouldn't mean spending hours hunched over a desk. Parents can be supportive by demonstrating study and organization skills, explaining a tricky problem, or just encouraging kids to take a break. And who knows? Parents might even learn a thing or two!
