All about SAT Subject Testing

While SAT reasoning test is all about measuring IQ, when we are referring to knowledge, SAT subject testing comes into picture.

I have focused a lot on SAT reasoning test in my previous articles though there are lot other SAT tests available which you can take. Precisely they are known as SAT Subject tests. These tests include lot more than SAT reasoning tests like advanced mathematics, science, literature and history. The SAT Subject test checks your knowledge about the subject whereas the reasoning test checks your intelligence.

In recent years, SAT subject has become famous with college admission controllers. Many colleges require you to take number of subject exams while few of them specify the tests you need to go through for admissions. The grading and scoring of SAT subject test is similar to reasoning one and is scaled on 800 points. Additionally, it includes a curve indicating you may omit few questions while still score “800.”

The duration of test is sixty minutes and the questions may vary in-between 60-100. While in one testing session you may take up to three subject tests together, however, you cannot take one subject and one reasoning test together due to time limitations. And unlike reasoning test, you can register for subject test at the testing center which is exceptional to SAT subject test.

You may appear for maximum three tests on any specified date. These three exam will cost you $20 plus $9 per exam. In case the test has a listening part, then it costs at $20 and an additional $20 per exam. The language exam with listening part is conducted in the month of November each year. All information pertaining to registration and test dates can be found on the college’s official web site.

An important thing that needs to be considered is “Score Choice” wherein you reserve the rights to submit your scores. In the past, college boards have been switching their decisions whether to keep this option opened for students or not. However, as of now, students still have the option to send/submit their scores.

The solving and answering strategies for reasoning test applies to subject test in many ways, like, we have a penalty for guessing and so you must not “Christmas tree” the questions. Furthermore, the time is limited so you will need to manage the time right. But the difference lies in how you prepare both of them. The reasoning test is comprehensive and relatively tougher to prepare unlike subject test which is much easier and you have a good reason to take up this test, so do well!

Let us highlight some of the advantages of subject test:

• I might have missed on this above but it’s important to find that some colleges need subject test to be cleared as a mandate.
• Many colleges want some specific scores on subject test as a qualification to admissions. This helps you to set your goal easily.
• Good scores in subject test can help you to “klep” classes.
• Just like reasoning test judges you on your intellectual level, the subject test scores reflects your knowledge and look like a fine sculpture on resume.
