Become an EFL Educator with a TEFL Program
This article throws light on the increasing demand for trained EFL/ESL teachers and how a TEFL program will help all aspirants gain the expertise and help them in achieving the career that they yearn for.
TEFL which stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language is a synonym of TESOL which is the abbreviation for Teaching English to the Speakers of Other Languages. Both denotes Teaching English or other subjects in English especially to the non-native English speakers of the world, to the people whose exposure and practice of the language is quite limited.
ESL/EFL (English as a Second Language/English as a Foreign Language) teaching is become popular day-by-day due to the increasing popularity of the English language in the global market. As more and more non-native English speaking nations like Asian countries, Latin American and European countries are trying to make English as their official language of communication, the educational institutes there, are trying to recruit well trained teachers and educators who will be capable enough to take classes and train the learners English communication skills as well as teach other subjects in the English Language.
If an aspiring TEFL candidate is eager to enrol for a TEFL course, it does not matter whether he/she has a teaching experience for many years or is a total newbie in the field of teaching; what matters is the zeal and the enthusiasm to become a teacher and think of the contribution and impact that he/she is able to bring on the students’ life. If the aspirant is quite comfortable with travelling, rather enjoys doing sotothe various different places and also has the ability to adapt and adjust himself with the new surroundings, food, culture and its people, likes to step out of their comfort zone and try out new possibilities, is able to maintain one’s composure in the face of adversity, then thinking of a career in ESL/EFL teaching may be a good idea.
Teaching not only enhances mental stimulation of the educator but also widens one’s perspectives and horizons. Education is such that it stirs the soul and mind of both the teacher and the students.Like every other job, TEFL/TESOL also has its challenges which the teachers have to face and overcome. However, this being unlike a regular nine-to-five job, there can be many new testing times, which the teacher can take care only with his presence of mind and of course approaches that he gains through training. Teaching a new language to learners of various ages is no mean task, and making them confident in the language to be used for communication is really a big job. This is where a training certificate on TEFL/TESOL will come to the rescue.
TEFL deals with the innovative and modern teaching methodologies and techniques of teaching and approaching learners belonging from different backgrounds, culture and ages. A learner-centric course, TEFL courses are unlike traditional teaching and are designed keeping in mind the needs of the present generation, where the teacher is at the backstage with the focus being on the learners, where they are encouraged to speak and interact with the other learners and the teacher, acting as a facilitator and not an instructor.
There are usually three stages of TEFL programs available with different training institutes, namely, 120 hour Certificate Course, 220 hour Diploma Course, and 280 hour P G Diploma Course. The Certificate course is a basic course that makes the candidates acquaint themselves with the fundamental knowledge required to start their TEFL career. The Diploma and the P G Diploma courses are for those who are confident about the course and are earnest regarding having a successful career on TEFL.
The course curriculum comprises of language acquisition skills, communication skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking, lesson planning, classroom management and many important topics that are integral to ESL/EFL teaching. These courses are offered, more often than not, in the online mode of education for the advantage of the candidates. Since candidates are from various places around the world, hence online courses are appropriate and prove convenient for them to pursue with the hassle of travelling to attend the classes. However, for those who do not have any experience in the relevant teaching field, is advised to practice the skills and knowledge that they acquire from the course, in the local schools, near their place of residence so that they get accustomed to a classroom environment and know the methods of approaching and dealing with students in the classroom.
