Maharashtra will follow the single common entrance test (CET) model for admission to engineering colleges including Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and National Institute of Technology (NIT) from the academic year 2014-15,” said higher and technical education minister Rajesh Tope here on Friday.

He was speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony of the regional office of Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE). He said,Engineering aspirants in state to face single CET from 2014-15 Articles “A proposal in this regard has been prepared and will be presented to the state cabinet for approval”. The Centre has insisted on this new pattern being implemented from the next academic year, 2013-14, he added.

The new format suggested by human resources department minister Kapil Sibal for admission to all central government funded engineering institutions, proposes a single common entrance test (CET) that will replace the old IIT-JEE and AIEEE.

Tope said, “Maharashtra state government will give 50% weightage to marks scored by students in their class 12 exam”.

Cracking a whip on unauthorised institutes in the state, he said, “The state is ready with the draft bill of Unauthorised Institutions Act. Since it wasn’t tabled in this session, we will table it in the winter session.

Engineering Graduation

As per the proposal, any institution running a course having a duration of 12 months or more without approval of All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) will be penalised. The institute will have to pay a fine of Rs5 lakh and the guilty will face up to one year in jail.”
