Essay writing is very different from report writing. Essay has a continuous flow with four main sections introduction, main body, conclusion and reference list. Effective signposting should be used for getting good grades in essay assignments.

Essay writing is an important skill in which students are usually tested through different assignments in both US and PG courses. Essay is quite different from a report and does not have separate headings but a continuous flow of paragraphs not underlining,How to do Essay Assignments in a Best Way? Articles bullet points, lists etc as in a report. Essays also usually do not contain diagrams and appendixes.

Essays usually start with introduction, than have main body, conclusion and finally references list. Introduction paragraph introduces the topic and sums up what you are going to in this essay and what would be your outline of the essay. Usually you should restrict your introduction of essay to about 10% of the word limit. After introduction paragraph, you have to start main body where one has to provide evidences of what they writing from and to back your ideas with data, examples and scholarly references. After the main body, you would have conclusions and recommendations based on your arguments and data given in the main body section of the essay assignment.

Tips for Writing an Essay:

  1. Follow all the instructions given in the class by your lecturer or in your module guide.
  2. Read the essay topic few times, underline the key words and make sure that you understand all the words clearly that are mentioned in the essay topic.
  3. You can brainstorm for ideas and collect your thoughts on a paper using Mind Map.
  4. Introduction paragraph should be of around 10% of the word limit given and you can ask for more specific guidelines from your tutor.
  5. Make sure that you define key words given in the title. Outline of the essay should be given in the essay introduction and signposting should be judiciously used so the reader interest could be aroused in your essay.
  6. Each paragraph should be linked with previous paragraph using signposts and there should be a smooth flow in the writing of essay.
  7. Each paragraph should address one point or argument. First line should be about the main point that you are making in that particular paragraph and rest it should be further developing the argument using evidences and analysis.
  8. Do in-text referencing and also add references in the final reference list as you are writing your essay. Do not leave your referencing until your essays finishes. This is very important to avoid plagiarism in your essay.
  9. Use signposting words for linking paragraphs of your essay like however, on the other hand, consequently, to summarise, a different view on this, in the same line etc. that clear guide the reader which direction your essay is moving forward.
  10. After the main body, write conclusion section of your essay that should be around 10% word of your total word count. Basically you have to summarise what are key points or arguments you have mentioned in your essay and how these relate to the essay topic and what is your final conclusion.
  11. Finally proofread your essay 2-3 times before finally handing-in your assignment.
