It’s Never Too Late to Learn

The proverb “it’s never too late to learn” has been spread for thousands of years. Through the history, the only reason why those people are immortal and get great popularity is that they are keep on learning and they constantly absorb knowledge of different sectors. Besides, the attitude towards learning of people in the old days is worthy of our study. On the contrary, a cease from learning for just a few days can make a person lag behind, even if for an erudite person, stop learning can lead to rigidity of mind. As a result, learning is a lifelong task. The golden age of the past was one in which men plowed the fields and women wove cloth, so they lead a simple lifestyle. Among them, few numbers of people have the chance to learn. From the history, the famous writer Gorky—the most outstanding representative figure of the proletariat was born in a poor family. He only had two years’ learning in the primary school. After that he worked as apprentice, porter, and baker and so on. Moreover, he wandered in the south of Russia for a long time; so to speak, he once suffered from the torture of life. However, he had a profound love for reading. Under any circumstances, he could take advantage of every chance and every minute to learn. As he said “I'm bashing the book, like a starving man bashing in the bread, the book has become my spiritual food”. In order to read books, he suffered all kinds of humiliation. When he was young, he had no money to buy books; he only could borrow money to purchase books. Gorky had been a voracious reader all his life, which contributed to his accomplishment, he had written a great number of influential books. The example tells us if you are determined to learn, you can get knowledge and you can make your dream come true. In modern society, people pay much attention to fast-food culture. Few and few people attach great importance to self-improvement and spiritual fulfillment. Lifelong learning arises against this kind of background. It aims to overcome difficulties in our work, solve problems in life, satisfy the needs of our living and development, better to realize self-value, enrich the spiritual life and increase the quality of our life. However, lifelong learning not only refers to reading books to learn knowledge, it touches upon any kind of learning that could make you live your life to the fullest. It is not difficult to see that many housewives who always stay at home to do housework learn to make jewelry themselves and develop it into a small business. It is a kind of lifelong learning; they wholesale beads for jewelry and charms for jewelry making to make various kinds of pendants or accessories to sell on the flea market. They make great efforts to make their own monotonous life become colorful, lifelong learning is not confined to learning knowledge and then becoming celebrities. Lifelong learning is not only the demand of work but also the requirement of life, and even the need of progress of human beings. The most important is to build the concept of learning all the life, cultivating the habit of active learning and continuous learning. The sentence “it’s never too late to learn” must have its meaning and is absolutely not the empty talk.
