But in China, a significant issue was already rearing itself in the form of a newly discovered virus that will later be designated as Covid-19.

In the last quarter of 2019, covid-19 became a global pandemic because the virus was fast spreading beyond its country of origin. Worse still, no vaccine can be deployed to protect its spread or cure for those already down with the virus. The best measure countries around the globe implemented were to close their borders, including land, sea, and airspace. Some countries went further to declare an internal lockdown within their respective domains.

How covid-19 lockdown impacted martial arts and dance classes for kids

Many businesses crashed because they haven't developed an alternative to service delivery beyond person-to-person transaction that requires physical presence. Those that offer martial art and dance classes for children were stunned by this latest development. Some instructors don't know what to do at this point because they were caught between shutting down their business for the foreseeable future or seeking alternatives like visiting homes to tutor their students privately.

When the coronavirus (covid-19) mandates fully came into full force in March 2020, Paul Mormando thought everything he had labored for in the last 30 years of being a Westerleigh and being a martial art studio owner had come to an end. For him to remain active in business, he had to think outside the box. He needs to find a way to continue his students' training while not breaking the covid-19 protocols put in place by the government.

Virtual class to the rescue

Although martial art institutions have content online where people get to watch their latest videos on trending skills regarding the art, however, covid-19 was the primary force that made many instructors adopt a non-conventional teaching method. With the aid of the zoom app, teachers and students can reconnect and continue their training, with the only difference is that they can see each other physically.

Aside from martial art, dance classes, dance studio classes were also disrupted. Amanda Dalli, the Center Stage Dance Company owner, said she had to look for alternatives to ensure that students remain in good shape throughout the lockdown period. With multiple dance competitions fast approaching and a pandemic heating so hard on their arrangement, her company adopted the virtual learning platform to bridge the gap.

With the combination of Vimeo for pre-recorded classes and Zoom for live classes, the company could get back on track.
