A police officer is a public servant. When working as a police officer, one will be responsible for maintaining law and order, evidence collection and investigation of crimes. Other duties of a police officer include directing traffic, patrolling a certain assigned area, making arrests when necessary, and assisting victims of crimes.

Yet, what are the requirements for becoming a police officer? They may vary from state to state slightly, however they are probably very much the same. In most states, the educational requirements for a police officer require that he or she possesses at least a 2 year or Associates Degree. If a police officer chooses to obtain a 4 year degree, the most common degree for these officers of the law is a criminal justice degree. With a 4 year degree, police officers can work for state or federal level departments.

The requirements for becoming a police officer include being at least 20 years of age and a citizen of the United States. In addition, if an applicant is bilingual, or is fluent in more than one language, he or she is at a definite advantage.

Any person who wants to know what do you need to be a police officer needs to know that he or she will have to undergo a battery of tests. These tests include tests that are of a physical, written, psychological and medical nature. In addition, once accepted, the future police officer will have to attend a training academy which can last anywhere from three months to one year, depending on the departmental regulations.

It is important to note that one needs to have a certain personality, as well as certain skills in order to become a police officer. For instance, a person should be able to remain calm in unpredictable situations. A person should also have respect for all human and animal life. They should also be able to be objective in certain situations. A dedication to uphold the law is also important, as are integrity and honesty.
