Simplifying the Admission Process for School Students

Delhi University (DU) has been taking steps to simplify the admission process at the undergraduate level.

The university has identified a  specific set of problems that students face during admission. Selecting the right subject and the right college are the most common problems. “We feel that there is a need to counsel students at the school level. Although the university used to arrange periodic career counseling sessions in schools, it was not enough,” informed SK Vij, dean, students’ welfare, DU. “To counter this deficit the university has planned to set up a career-counseling cell for school teachers and principals,” he added.

The university will organise information sessions on various colleges, the courses they offer and the admission procedure. “CBSE has started offering many new subjects in class XI. However, some of these subjects are not accepted at the university level for a particular course. Financial markets and marketing is one such subject. In fact, last year students had opted for this subject to ensure eligibility for a BCom course. However, we do not consider this subject for offering BCom admission. Hence, we lost many bright students last year,” shared Vij. He added that the career-counseling cell shall take cognisance of this and similar issues.

Incidentally, many colleges have different criteria for calculating percentage or for selecting the best four subjects. The counseling cell will train school teachers in all these aspects so that they have a clear idea of the Delhi University’s admission process.

As to the number of schools that will be participating, Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, deputy dean, students’ welfare, DU, said, “We have started the process of inviting teachers from Kendriya Vidyalayas, public and government schools.”
