The Belgian Congo is a big territory belonging to Belgium,What is Belgian Congo Articles deep in central Africa. It is 904,991 square miles in size, more than three times as large as Texas, and 1 1,500,000 people live there. The capital and largest city is Leopoldville. Most of the people are Negro.

Only about one out of three hundred is white. Most of the white people are Belgians, but other Europeans and a few Americans also live there. Most of the Negro people in the Belgian Congo belong to various Bantu tribes, and they speak many different languages. One of them is called Swahili. These tribes are peaceful, and they have learned many trades. There are also tribes of Pygmies living in the jungle. The Pygmies are very small people, usually no more than four and a half feet tall.

They are among the least civilized of all people. Pygmies are not unfriendly if they are left undisturbed, but when they hear an enemy approaching, they hide in the forest. Many of the people are farmers. They raise cotton, coffee, and other tropical crops, in the fertile region along the Congo River. Many natives also work in the rich mines. More industrial diamonds are mined in the Belgian Congo than in any other region in the world. Coal, copper, radium, gold and uranium are also mined there. More than half the uranium in the world comes from the Belgian Congo. People also work in the cities, in factories that have been built by Europeans. Most of the natives do not live in cities, but in small villages.
