If you are one of the many young people (or their parents) who are looking at gap year programs right now, then you are doing what a lot of people are doing. This is a very viable alternative to continuing straight on to college, and one that helps young people learn more about themselves as well as figure out what they want to do with their lives.

As a parent, you may think that gap year programs are a year off from responsibility and accountability, but nothing could be further from the truth. Most people who come back from their gap year say that they never worked harder, but they had a lot of fun while doing it.

The key to sending your child off on a successful gap year is to evaluate several different gap year programs and find one that both you and your child can agree on, and one that is run by a recognized and experienced agency. It is a good idea to talk to other kids who have been on gap years run by the same program, to see what possible pitfalls there might be, and to see if the company is as good as it says it is.
