NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Julio Lopez Vietri in the Portal to Dreams. The exhibition opens May 19, 2017 and runs through June 8, 2017 with an opening reception on Thursday, May 25 from 6-8 pm.
Trained as an architect and artist, Julio Lopez Vietri creates images that combine spontaneity with a highly developed eye for structure. Working on canvas and cardboard, in media ranging from oil paints to cloth, corrugated paper, screws and bolts, Vietri bridges the gap between collage and painting. Whether he is layering materials over each other or producing the appearance of depth and space through a disciplined handling of light and shadow, the artist gives each image a boldly physical presence. While he notes that his work “does not aim at realism,” even the most abstract shape or form takes on a life of its own.
Elements of constructivist art and surrealism can be seen in Vietri’s work. Starting from precise shapes and forms, the scope of his paintings expands, manipulating perspective and space to result in a depiction of the world of dreams and the unconscious. “I try to project myself into an uncertain future,” the artist says, and that sense of exploration and experimentation gives his work its unique appeal. The artist lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

About the Exhibition
The Portal to Dreams
Portal to Dreams is a new group exhibition that offers alternative visions of reality expressed through abstraction, surrealism, and technical experimentation. This collection of artists features three painters of the human form: one who creates psychological studies using expressive brushstrokes, one who constructs bodies out of geometrical shapes and tempered colors, and one who paints modern narrative scenes containing bodies treated surrealistically. There is also an abstract oil painter who uses winding lines and textures to create intricate shapes. Finally, there is a digital artist whose richly colored patterns move very slowly in a new kind of genre. The pieces in Portal to Dreams are undeniably bold and forward-thinking.
