NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Yuliya Alagir in the Portal to Dreams. The exhibition opens May 19, 2017 and runs through June 8, 2017 with an opening reception on Thursday, May 25 from 6-8 pm.
Combining oil, acrylic, and watercolor paints, Multicultural artist Yuliya Alagir paints pieces that shine with energy. Highly totemic and symbolic, Alagir's works appear almost like archaeological objects. Raised lines and symbols lend each composition a tangible quality, even as flat or subtly textured colors lie earthy beneath. The raised paint mingles with blending colors, sometimes subtle and sometimes assertive, but always lending dimension and warmth. The result is a series of images that give the impression of having their own individual mythologies. In each work, organic colors play off of Yuliya Alagir's segmented, carefully rendered shapes, so that even in paint the works gain a natural, sculpted quality, as if crafted by bare human hands. Abstract, symbolic, and figurative forms intermingle, imbuing the work with layers of meaning and recognition in each painting. Yuliya references ancient, multicultural traditions in order to prompt self reflection from her viewers.
Yuliya Alagir draws influences from human potential and myth. Most recently, Yuliya Alagir's work has emphasized the sun, highlighting personal development through solar symbolism.

About the Exhibition
The Portal to Dreams
Portal to Dreams is a new group exhibition that offers alternative visions of reality expressed through abstraction, surrealism, and technical experimentation. This collection of artists features three painters of the human form: one who creates psychological studies using expressive brushstrokes, one who constructs bodies out of geometrical shapes and tempered colors, and one who paints modern narrative scenes containing bodies treated surrealistically. There is also an abstract oil painter who uses winding lines and textures to create intricate shapes. Finally, there is a digital artist whose richly colored patterns move very slowly in a new kind of genre. The pieces in Portal to Dreams are undeniably bold and forward-thinking.
