In her photography,Kathleen Messmer: Delving Deep into the Abstract at Agora Gallery Articles American artist Kathleen Messmer captures the convergence of gesture, lines, shadows, and texture to create truly emotive works. Messmer takes recognizable objects and transforms them into fantastical compositions of flow and light, boldness and color, and ever-evolving form.

Inspired by the work of Leonardo da Vinci, Imogen Cunningham, Karl Blossfeldt, and Georgia O’Keeffe, Messmer has indeed made natural light and shadow a central theme of her work. Like O’Keeffe, much of her art is focused on the eternal mysteries hidden within the flower. As Messmer explains, “Botanical abstracts offer a beautiful, voluptuous symphony of the lines and color I look for most. Sometimes I get serenity; other times I get riotous movement, bold statements, and power….They fascinate me with their presence. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Kathleen Messmer currently lives and works in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is also involved in the wildlife preservation photography project “UnWildlife.”
