How to make kids feel home in new apartment?

Many moms and dads are feeling a little anxious about how to move with children successfully. Many children (and moms and fathers for that matter) feel both excited and anxious about establishing their new place. Here are five things you can do to help your kids get comfortable during the process of settling in and feel more at home, earlier than later.

Your family moves into a new apartment and you want to help your kids settle down in their new home with minimal stress and a little fun among all the unpackaging, furniture arranging and searching for the toilet paper.

Many moms and dads are feeling a little anxious about how to move with children successfully. Many children (and moms and fathers for that matter) feel both excited and anxious about establishing their new place. Here are five things you can do to help your kids get comfortable during the process of settling in and feel more at home, earlier than later.

Have necessities at the ready

The last thing you want to do when the family gets sick of the travel upheaval and gets bored and cranky is to think about what to eat for dinner. Bring some ready-made food to the new apartment, so that during the first few days everyone can easily fill up with low stress.

You would always be thankful if you can easily locate some of the toys for your family, have their toiletries at hand and know where the phone charger is. If your child is old enough to be responsible, you might even allow them to be in charge of the "priority" box during the entire process of moving.

Keep a Routine for your Child

If your child is not yet comfortable with your new place, spend some time investigating both the interior and the outside of the building. Be sure you answer all the questions and explain what's going to be new ... and what's going to be the same. Younger kids may want to continue this adventure with a stuffed toy, whereas older ones may want to take photos to continue with peers.

Make Bed Ready for Your Child

Yes – maybe it's not the first thing on the agenda but building the child's bed automatically offers a dedicated spot of familiarity and comfort. This even offers your son or daughter an uncluttered place to hang out while you're dealing with preparations moving in. And if there's no bed space yet, consider letting your child choose a fun new place to sleep on that special first night – it could be a great night to sleep under a homemade tent on the floor!

Become a Tour guide of that house

If your child is not yet comfortable with your new place, spend some time investigating both the interior and the outside of the building. Be sure you answer all the questions and explain what's going to be new ... and what's going to be the same. Younger kids may want to continue this adventure with a stuffed toy, whereas older ones may want to take photos to continue with peers.

Become a good Role Model

Really, this is a time when actions speak louder than words. Listen to their worries if your child is worried about living in a new city, and agree that moving is not easy. Invite your child to make choices, such as where to place images or in which drawer to position the silverware, and let them know their opinion is valuable. And as with so many experiences with the parentingFree Reprint Articles, patience is your friend. Give space and time for your child to test out the unfamiliar. They will start settling in over time and will eventually feel right at home.
