It is so easy to slip into a negative attitude.  Parents are tired and over-busy.  It gets frustrating when things just don't go our way.  We forget to look at the glass half full instead of half empty.

All too often,Thankful Jar Articles we hear our children start sounding like us.  Of course, why wouldn't they?  We are their prominent influence.  So, when we hear our children speak compassionately, optimistically and full of wonder, we are proud.

But, when we hear the negativism and see it growing, we become concerned.  We don't want our children to turn sour on life.  We want them to see the positive.  We know that life rarely turns out as expected, sometimes better, sometimes not so much, regardless, life is full of wonderful moments and we mustn't let the negatives take control.

Therefore, if you are concerned about the negative comments, here is a great family activity that will help.  This will be fun for the whole family and a reminder of what is important.

Reward the positive, ignore the negative. Instead of trying to catch the negative comments, catch the positive.  Turn this into a family fun game!

Is there a certain movie the kids want to see?

Is there a special restaurant your family is hoping to eat at soon?

Is there a favorite board game lying on the shelf?

Decide to reward a positive attitude and let your family earn a privilege. Wash out a plastic jar.

1.         Cut up pieces of paper and write messages on them.

The messages should be words of encouragement, you know,

the ‘pump them up’ words like: great job, nice attitude,

good problem-solving skills, thanks for the compliment,

            good follow-through, etc.

2.         When you hear a positive comment

or see a positive action, grab the appropriate message, hand it to

the grantor of the good deed and place it in the THANKFUL JAR.

Explain that you are thankful for their positive choice.

Watch the jar fill and attitudes change.

Decide on when the reward will be granted.

For example:

When the jar has 50 positive slips of paper in it, we will go to a movie.

Draw a line in the jar every 3 inches.  When it gets to that line a reward is enacted.  As the jar fills higher, a more favorable reward is achieved.

When the time comes for the reward, enjoy!

Your family has definitely earned it and along the way, made the world a better place to live!

Make this a fun family game!  Keep it light and joyful as your jar fills.  This is a great kids activity that can change their outlook on life.
