Wardrobes have changed considerably over the years, and although many people still prefer to buy antique furniture for their bedroom, in the main older furniture is not practical for today’s modern houses.

Antique wardrobes as a rule are made of beautiful solid woods such as Mahogany,Wardrobes Through The Years Articles Burr Walnut and Oak. Some have a mirrored door, either on the outside or one on the inside of an opening door, and some have an inbuilt dressing table as well as drawers.

As beautiful as these wardrobes are, they do tend to take up a great deal of space in a bedroom, without providing all the extra options and accessories that can now be found in modern day wardrobes.

In many old houses the furniture reflected the status of the owner. Wardrobes that were highly polished Mahogany, for example, were prized pieces of furniture but often extremely heavy and encroached into the bedroom leaving little space to move around.

Today’s wardrobes are designed to fit closely to the wall with lightweight doors. This means more space inside the wardrobe itself in which to fit drawers, shelves hanging rails, and many other very useful accessories, leaving plenty of walking area within the bedroom itself.

Depending upon your requirements, you can have fitted wardrobes, a freestanding lightweight wardrobe collection, or a walk in wardrobe. Fitted wardrobes come in a variety of colours and designs and have many different options to make storage problems easier to solve.

Areas within today’s contemporary wardrobes are sectioned off to accommodate shoes, bags and hats in one section, allowing plenty of space for pull out drawers, trouser, tie and shirt racks, as well as pull down rails for dresses, skirts etc. Every item of clothing can be neatly stored away in a wardrobe section of the bedroom, leaving plenty of space for a King size bed and any other pieces of furniture you choose to make the bedroom into a comfortable and peaceful room.

Children’s bedrooms lend themselves to small unobtrusive contemporary furniture. A wardrobe which can be placed in the corner of a room allows plenty of space for books, toys, stereo’s and all the other important things a child likes to keep. Leaving clothes lying around the floor is normally the preferred option for most children, but maybe a coloured, well designed wardrobe will encourage them to hang up at least a few of their clothes on a daily basis.

Your style of house will often determine the choice of wardrobe, but even in an old property the modern style wardrobes can be designed to complement the ambience of a room. They are more convenient from the point of view of space, and certainly offer a large storage area which in turn means clothes will be less likely to become soiled or creased.

Over the years fashion has changed the way we dress. Our clothes have become lighter and less bulky. Overall we buy more of them than we did years ago. Contemporary wardrobes cater for this change in trends and give us a greater variety of options to suit our lifestyle.
