If you really want to do things correctly, then you will buy green coffee beans and roast them yourself at home.  Coffee beans which have been roasted one to three days prior to being ground up and brewed will yield the best cup of coffee.

In order to do this though, you will need to get your hands on a coffee grinder and a roasting machine.  It is worth all of the extra effort though.  If you want the best, then you must be willing to do a bit more work than just dumping grounds in a machine and pushing a button.

If you brew coffee on a regular basis, it is best for you to invest in a thermal carafe too.  This way, your coffee will retain its temperature for longer periods of time without you having to heat it back up.  A warming plate would continue to cook the coffee and it would end up tasting bitter.

In order to make good coffee, the coffee maker needs to be kept in top-notch continue.  It is best for you to clean it out on a regular basis.  Coffee will taste bitter if the machine is not maintained properly.

You will need to take it apart and clean the inside of the machine too.  Make sure the coffee pot is cleaned on a regular basis with soap and water.  Soaking the inside of the pot with vinegar or baking soda will also help.

There are many different methods of brewing coffee.  You do not need to rely on a traditional drip-coffee machine.  However, these machines do offer the advantage of being programmable, so you can have a fresh pot waiting for you when you wake up.

Other methods may produce coffee which tastes even better.  For example, using a French press is said to make the best cup of coffee overall.  Therefore, if you are really trying to learn how to brew the best coffee, then consider learning a thing or two about other methods than you are currently using.
