From experience I can tell you that using an open tea infuser significantly embellishes the taste of the tea when compared to alternatives. Open tea infusers allow the tea to flow freely while steeping instead of being clumped and bunched together inside a tea bag or tea balls or closed infusers.
When tea leaves are steeping in hot water, they release the flavor while expanding, and need room to move about. If you don't allow them this room, then much of the flavor of the tea will remain trapped between and in the leaves, and you'll be deprived of a great cup of tea. It would really be a crime if you were to shove fair trade organic / biodynamic tea into small disposable bags or other such tea prisons. A crime against the tea, and a crime against the farmers who are working hard to bring you the incredible teas from around the world.
Besides the taste, disposable tea bags are not great for the environment - tossing out tea bags is an incredible waste of the resources and energy that went into making them in the first place, so even if they are compostable, the energy that went into making them is lost when you throw them out. As for re-usable tea bags, they tend to absorb a little bit of the flavor of the tea you are steeping, so you will not be having a pure tasting cup of tea if you like to try different teas. Also, they can be a hassle to wash out.
Another really important aspect of using an open infuser is that after your tea is steeped, you don't need to throw out the tea leaves: they're great for fertilizing your plants. Although, if you tend to have house plant gnats, then I would recommend using them only on outdoor plants. I've been told that roses love them!
Another use for used tea leaves is to soak them again to make a natural organic window cleaner! Just soak the used leaves as if you were making a second pot of tea and used the water to clean your mirrors or windows. After, toss out the water (this is not something you can keep around for days!) and toss the leaves into your indoor or outdoor plants. If you have none, then the compost is fine, of course.
