Wuyi Rock Tea is a general term for the category of Wuyi Oolong tea produced in the north of Fujian province. It belongs to the kind of semi-fermented tea. It is well known for the unique “charm of rock”, a rock aroma which makes you enjoy a rich and mellow taste along with an endless sweet aftertaste.

Wuyi Rock Tea combines the delicate fragrance of green tea with the mellow taste of black tea. It is regarded as the best category in Oolong tea and it is a representative of China’s top teas. It also enjoys a long history. Being one of the top tea in China,Wuyi Rock Tea Articles it is also the forefather of Oolong tea. It played an important role in the tea development in China. During the North and South Dynasty (about 479 A.D) the tea had already been well-known. Later in Song and Yuan Dynasty it was paid as a tribute to the royal family. In the sixth year of Dade Reign in Yuan Dynasty (about 1302 A.D), a Royal Tea Garden was set up by the bank of the Fourth-bend of the river. In Ming Dynasty tea makers improved the tea-processing techniques, thus producing the oolong tea, which is the present Rock tea. In the 17th century, Wuyi tea was even sold abroad and enjoyed an even greater reputation.

The main component of Wuyi Tea is middle-sized or small-sized leaves and tea made of these leaves is called Wuyi rock-essence tea, which is the earliest Oolong Tea and the treasure of Oolong Tea. It grows in the area governed by Wuyishan City.

Wuyi Oolong Tea Classification

Geology is of such importance that oolong teas from this region (yancha) are classified based on growing location:

Zhengyan: grown in the official Wuyishan region. The teas grown here are very expensive, but the taste is exceptional.

Banyan: grown in areas surrounding the official region with quality that closely matches zhengyan. The price quality of banyan is much better than zhengyan.

Zhouyan: growing in areas further away from the official region. The quality of these teas usually don't come close to zhengyan and banyan.
