Greenhouse Shade Cloth

Greenhouse Shade Cloths are used to reduce the sunlight entering your greenhouse.

Avid gardeners around the country know that the best option for year-round gardening can lie in building a greenhouse. Greenhouses offer the option of retaining lots of warmth with glass roofs or retaining cool temperatures by placing a greenhouse shade.  A small backyard shed or a grandly designed building, these “hothouses” provide a nurturing environment for delicate plants.

To quickly explain how a greenhouse works, sunlight enters the structure through plastic or glass windows and the warmth from the light is then retained by insulation from the walls and roof. This allows many plants like flowers, fruits or vegetables to grown when they would otherwise be exposed to too much heat or too much cold.

A greenhouse shade is often purchased to protect the plants from absorbing too much sunlight. Basic shades are available, usually made from weather and UV resistant cloth, with focus on durability. Visual aesthetic is not neglected, and many color and pattern options can be purchased. To maintain proper ventilation, the cloth shade is easily cut to fit the preexisting greenhouse vents.

Greenhouse shade is also available in the form of netting. Netting does not offer as much sun deflection and shade, but is considerably cheaper per linear foot and if the plants being shaded do not need extensive coverage, netting works just fine.

Online retailers offer greenhouse cloth by the foot, ranging from about $3.50-$5.00 per linear foot. This is a great do-it-yourself project, and with a little online research many step-by-step guides are readily available. Websites retailing greenhouse shade cloths and netting often also carry rings for stabilization and guidebooks on the project.

While it may be a weekend (or two) long projectFree Reprint Articles, the do-it-yourself construction of a your own greenhouse and assembling the greenhouse shade to the roof and side is a rewarding and worthwhile (think of the plants!) task.
