According to the National Organization for Rare Diseases,Adult Panic Anxiety Syndrome Articles adult panic anxiety syndrome has no diagnosable causes. Individuals who suffer from the syndrome experience episodes of intense fear and apprehension that can last for only a few moments or significantly longer. Researchers surmise the syndrome may have a biochemical foundation. Other’s hypothesize it may be inherited—the result of a dominant autosomal trait. Onset usually occurs in late adolescence or early adulthood.

Symptoms

The syndrome is characterized by recurring panic attacks. Symptoms include fear of dying, fear of becoming insane, feelings of impending doom and dread of losing control of one’s life. Physical symptoms mirror those of general panic attacks

  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Chest pain
  • Burning or pricking
  • Dizziness
  • Hot and cold flashes

Attacks can occur at any time. Most attacks last only for a few minutes. In rare cases, attacks can continue for hours. The disorder affects females twice as often as males.

Chromosomal causes

Human body cells have 46 chromosomes—23 pairs. Males have an X and Y chromosome; females have two X chromosomes. Recessive genetic disorders—such as adult panic anxiety disorder—occur when a person inherits the same abnormal gene for the same trait from each parent. Studies of families where the syndrome exists have shown individuals may have inherited abnormal genes from both parents. Scientists note pinpointing the exact gene is difficult because there are four or five chromosomal sites where the gene may be active.

Treatment and therapy

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors—SSRIs—are the most often prescribed medications for the syndrome. If these prove ineffective, physicians may prescribe antianxiety medications such as Xanax. Since Xanax is part of the benzodiazepine family, it is recommended for short-term use to prevent addiction. Psychotherapy has been proven effective when the therapist is able to establish a rapport and build trust with the patient. Once the patient feels safe, the therapist can gradually explore the underlying causes that may be fueling the syndrome. Of course, talk therapy will not be effective if chromosomal abnormalities are causing the condition.
