Breast Augmentation - Placing Implants

Breast augmentation is the procedure in which adding size or volume to the breasts is the most common goal. If you would like larger, fuller or even tighter looking breasts, this procedure can be a good one to accomplish that. You will work with your cosmetic surgeon to determine what size and type of implant you want. This procedure often involves placing implants inside, either on or under tissues, to provide an enhanced look. However, this procedure does require a surgical incision. As such, there are often decisions to be made about placement.

With breast augmentation, doctors will work with you to determine what your goals are. You will be able to talk about and make decisions about things such as the texture of the implant, the size and the location of the incision. Doctors can offer several options for the placement of the implants.

• The most common incision is made under the breasts in the natural fold of the skin. This allows for a sizable opening that is fairly well hidden. The implants are slid into place in this area. Those who are younger and thinner, especially those who have not had children, will have a more visible scar than others.

• A cut under the arm can also work. This procedure will involve the use of an endoscope, a very small camera on a surgical instrument. This allows there to be no scars on the breasts themselves, though you may have a visible scar under your arm.

• Another option allows the surgeon to make an incision around the areola, the darker skinned area around the nipple. Once opened, the implant is put into place through this opening. Those who are likely to have children and wish to breastfeed in the future, or those who want to have sensation around the nipple may not benefit from this method.

• A new type of procedure allows a surgical cut to be made in the area of the belly button. An endoscope is then used to implant the implants into the appropriate area.

Discuss your needs and desires with your cosmetic surgeon to determine which of these procedures is best for your needs. It may also depend on the size of the implant you plan to use and your surgeon's recommended or preferred methods. In most cases, though, you can voice your opinion about which method you would like to use. It can make a difference in the way you look, after all.
