The procedure called virtual colonoscopy, merges X-ray and computer technology to produce three-dimensional angles of the complete span of the colon, the large intestine. "It's a less invasive test," said Dr. Judy Yee, an Associate Professor and Vice Chairwoman of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco, and Chief of Radiology at the San Francisco VA Medical Center.  "You don't have to introduce a 6-foot-long probe into the colon through the rectum."

Yee added that radiation issues are exaggerated. "It's been shown that virtual colonoscopy is a low-dose examination," she stated.

"The hope is that virtual colonoscopy will bring in individuals who aren't ever considering being screened, who need to be screened," said Yee.
