Before the surgery the food goes through the stomach and enters the small intestine, where all of the calories and nutrients are taken in. After that it goes to the large intestine and that is where it stays until a majority of it leaves your body.

There are many types of Gastric Bypass Surgery, the most common being the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. In this surgery your stomach is made smaller by creating a small pouch at the top of the stomach using surgical staples or a plastic band. The smaller stomach is connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine, bypassing the rest of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine.

When most people hear the word surgery, they think oh no I do not want to do this, but this procedure is not one to be too worried about, it is quite simple and definitely worth it in the long run.

After you have this procedure done, you will be able to continue with normal activities in three to five weeks, the only big change that will need to be made, is the way you eat. You will now notice that you can only eat a little bit if food, since your stomach was shrunk. Everybody knows that when you drink a lot of fluids when you eat, you get full way faster, after the surgery since your stomach is shrunk, you will not be able to drink anything thirty minutes before and after you eat. That being said you can now see what a difference this surgery makes in the size of your stomach.

Now you are probably wondering how much weight will be lost and how long it takes. Well most people that have had the surgery lose weight immediately and continue losing weight for up to one year. One study noted that people lost about one-third of their excess weight (the weight above what is considered healthy) in 1 to 4 years. Some of the lost weight may be regained, but that is how it goes with everything that is done to lose weight. Just because you have had the surgery does not mean that you can indulge in bad foods and not exercise.

Gastric bypass is a good way to help you get on track to being the thin healthy person that everyone wants to be.
