Most people don’t realize there are natural ways to improve eyesight. So much time spent staring at the computer screen and television has resulted in excessive eye strain. Dr. William Bates developed techniques to relieve eye strain and improve vision naturally. A few of the basic techniques are included here.

Poor eyesight is a common problem affecting people of all ages. Most people believe that eyesight can only be improved through the use of glasses,Improving Vision the Natural Way Using the Bates Method Articles contact lenses, or lasik surgery. What most people do not know is that it’s possible to improve your eyesight naturally.

In the early 20th century Dr. William Bates laid out the premise that how good your vision is depends on how well you use and exercise your eyes.  Our eyes are constantly active and receptive to the visual world. They perceive light, lack of light, color, movement, form, and depth. Unfortunately, in our modern and technological world, we spend an excessive amount of time focusing our eyes on one spot, such as watching television or staring at a computer screen.   We also tend to strain our eyes to see something in the distance.   Bates believed that excessive strain on the eye muscles caused damage, leading to eventual deterioration of the vision.

Because we are so busy with processing and interpreting the written word and visual media, we forget to look and see the colors, shapes, depths, textures, shades, and movements all around us.   Bates developed techniques that require you to simply “look” and ease the strain on the eyes to improve vision naturally. These have come to be known as the Bates Method and are used all over the world, with great success, as a means of improving eyesight the natural way.   He believed that seeing movement is the single most important technique you can practice to help your eyesight.

The three main techniques as outlined in the Bates Method are as follows:

Palming

Close your eyes and cover them with the palms of your hand to ensure that no light, or very little, filters in. It is preferable to perform palming in a darkened room. The purpose of this process is to relax your eyes; so take care not to exert pressure on your eyeballs. Stay in this position for about ten minutes and breathe normally. Try palming at least once a day.

Swinging

There are five variations of the swing – the long, head, prayer, optical and drifting. The long swing is the easiest for beginners. As the term might indicate, this technique requires you to swing your body from side to side while standing and focusing on a distant object. Be sure not to stare and remember to blink constantly. In addition to being a relaxation exercise, swinging helps reduce any rigidity there might be in your eyes. Do about a 100 swings every day.

Sunning

Sunning is always done either in the morning or in the evening when the rays of the sun are the gentlest. You should never do this technique in the afternoon under harsh sunlight. Close your eyes and raise your head to face the sun. Then, slowly turn your head from one side to the other, maintaining steady and deep breathing all the while. You should never sun for more than 3 minutes a day and it should always be followed by palming for a few minutes.
