During the last year, I have been travelling around Europe looking for different ways to create costume jewellery that is eye catching, yet beautifully elegant and understated. It is a difficult act to strike an appropriate balance in design terms because one wants to be noticed without appearing too camp. Whist in England I discovered Bultti, a Dutch design house which really moved me. At Bulatti they source some of the most the most exquisite materials any jewellery designer could hope to have at his or her disposal. Mart Tiggeler and Maurice Krijger who have run Bulatti from their workshop in Obdam, Netherlands, for nearly 30 years, travel all over the world finding and collecting unusual materials which gives them their incredibly beautiful signature. I was enthralled to learn that the Dutch design duo have sourced shell pieces from the Phillipines, pearls from Majorca, hand made glass beads from the Czech Republic and gorgeous little ceramic beads from Greece. The marriage of these materials seems so effortless for the guys at Bulatti; they simply have the vision to create great things with an unmistakeable synergy. The base metal used is tombak and this is typically plated in bronze or old silver, with stones set by hand and every piece individually marked for authenticity. But it is the poise, balance and sophistication of Bulatti pieces that really sets off the exotic materials used. As I was returning to Italy by air following a fashion summit in Madrid, I was looking through a copy of Bride magazine, only to spot the unmistakable sight of a Bulatti bracelet being modelled. I instantly knew what it was because of its vibrancy and originality – well done Bulatti.
